The banga spice is a regulated mixture of Obenetietien, Beletete, Aidan fruit, chili pepper, rohojie, oburunbebe, and other Nigerian Food you can get at our online store.

It is a flavorful blend of spices commonly used in Nigerian cuisine, particularly in the preparation of banga soup, also known as Ofe Akwu. This spice blend adds a rich and aromatic taste to the soup, which is typically made from palm fruit extract and various meats or fish. Here’s a simple recipe for making banga spice powder at home:

Ingredients:

  • 4 tablespoons ground crayfish
  • 2 tablespoons dried pepper flakes (adjust to your spice preference)
  • 1 tablespoon ground dried bitter leaves (substitute with dried scent leaves if unavailable)
  • 2 teaspoons ground uziza seeds (substitute with ground black pepper if unavailable)
  • 2 teaspoons ground Ehuru seeds (Calabash Nutmeg)
  • 2 teaspoons ground dried ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground dried Cameroon pepper (substitute with cayenne pepper if unavailable)
  • 1 teaspoon ground dried Ehuru seeds (Calabash Nutmeg)
  • 1 teaspoon ground dried Oburunbebe stick (substitute with nutmeg if unavailable)
  • 1 teaspoon ground dried Ehiri (Monodora myristica)

Instructions:

  1. In a dry pan, lightly toast the ground crayfish over low heat for a few minutes until fragrant. Remove from the heat and let it cool.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the toasted ground crayfish with the remaining ingredients: dried pepper flakes, ground bitter leaves, ground uziza seeds, ground Ehuru seeds, ground dried ginger, ground dried Cameroon pepper, ground dried Ehuru seeds, ground dried Oburunbebe stick, and ground dried Ehiri.
  3. Mix all the ingredients together thoroughly until well combined.
  4. Transfer the banga spice powder to an airtight container or jar and store in a cool, dry place. It will stay fresh for several months.
  5. To use the banga spice powder in cooking, add it to your banga soup during the preparation process. The quantity of spice powder to use will depend on the quantity of soup you’re making and your personal taste preferences. Start with a small amount and adjust according to your desired level of spiciness and flavor.
